Legendary Luxembourg, Vianden Luxembourg

December 29, 2024 - by Muriel Dassen

Luxembourg is a country known for its breathtaking roads that are every motorcyclist’s dream and riding in Legendary Luxembourg should therefor be on every motorcyslist "bike-it list". We chose Vianden as the central point for this tour as it is one of Luxembourg’s most picturesque towns. So we’re taking you on the best roads, but also through the top things to do in Vianden.

Of course you can download the GPX / ITN files and full e-books of the 2 rides we have in this tour via our roadtrip planner but you can already find the info in this blogpost.

VIANDEN CASTLE

Vianden Castle

Our first tip has to be Vianden Castle, the crown jewel of the town. We’ve already highlighted this in our Roundtrip Curves and Castles that has Vianden as a stop over, but it is also a what we call Kodak moment in one of our rides of the Battle of the Bulge motorcycle tour with La Roche en Ardenne as its central point.

Built between the 11th and 14th centuries, this medieval fortress is one of the largest and most well-preserved castles in Europe. It offers a fascinating glimpse into Luxembourg’s history, with rooms filled with medieval artifacts, and stunning views over the town and the Our Valley. Nice to know: The castle was once in ruins but was meticulously restored in the 20th century, becoming the magnificent structure you see today. We’ve passed this gem of a castle countless times and also stopped often enough at the viewpoint, which is also well worth going to, as it is not very far away for us. But this is the first time we will be visiting the castle. You can visit the castle year-round from 10 to 18 in summer, with guided tours available in multiple languages, making it an essential stop on your trip. Visit this website for more information, but know that booking in advance is not necessary.

MAISON DE VICTOR HUGO

Maison de Victor Hugo

Next up is the Musée Littéraire or Maison Victor Hugo, a must-visit for literature lovers. This museum is dedicated to the famous French writer Victor Hugo, who stayed here during his exile in 1871. Inside, you’ll find a collection of Hugo’s personal belongings, manuscripts, and illustrations, offering a unique insight into his life and work. Victor Hugo was so enamored with Vianden that he often referred to it in his writings and sketches.

The museum is open year-round, except on Mondays and in summer only from 12 to 18. It’s a small museum but rich experience that takes you back to the 19th century. Although only in French, find more info on this website.

TÉLÉSIÈGE

Télésiège de Vianden

For a truly unique experience, take a ride on the Vianden Télésiège, or chairlift. The chairlift operates from April to October and check out the website here for the specific timetable.

This is the only chairlift in Luxembourg, and it offers spectacular views as you ascend 440 meters up the hill. At the top, you’ll find a lovely café where you can relax and enjoy the panoramic scenery before heading back down. With the Télesiege if you buy a return ticket or on foot for those of you who enjoy hiking and buy a single ticket. It is easy to combine with a walk down to the castle and truly is a great way to see Vianden from a totally different perspective.

THE VIEW ON THE CASTLE

Before we wrap up our tour of Vianden, we want to highlight the breathtaking view of Vianden Castle as extra tip you won’t want to miss. Whether you choose the viewpoint along the N322 that is in the GPX file of the ride in this Legendary Luxembourg motorcycle tour right at the end or at the top of the Télésiège, you’re in for a visual treat.

After a day of exploring Luxembourg with the amazing ride of this tour, you’ll want to relax and soak in the atmosphere of Vianden. The town has plenty of cozy cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy local Luxembourgish cuisine or simply unwind with a drink. The riverside promenade is also a lovely place for a leisurely stroll, with beautiful views of the Our River and the surrounding hills.

That’s our guide to Vianden—an enchanting town full of history, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you’re here for a quick visit or an extended stay, we hope these tips help you make the most of your time in Vianden, together with our tips on where to stay in Vianden with suitable parking for you bike.

RIDE 1

In today’s ride, we’re taking you on a legendary journey through Luxembourg, a country known for its breathtaking roads that are every motorcyclist’s dream. Our base for this adventure is the charming town of Vianden, and we’ve got an incredible 220 kilometre almost 140 miles ride ahead, filled with scenic routes, historic towns, and the winding roads that make Luxembourg so legendary.

VIANDEN

Vianden

Our adventure begins right here in Vianden. As we leave this picturesque town, get ready to dive into the best roads Luxembourg has to offer. We’ll be heading south, winding through the lush Ardennes forests so prepare yourself for a day filled with scenic routes, historic landmarks, and the kind of winding roads that make Luxembourg a true motorcyclist’s paradise.

LAROCHETTE

Larochette

After a thrilling start through the part of Luxembourg that is called Petite Suisse Luxembourgeoise, our first stop is in the lovely town of Larochette. Larochette meaning small rock in French. This charming market town, with its historic market square near the church, is the perfect place to take a break, stretch your legs, and enjoy a coffee. Take in the peaceful atmosphere and get ready for the next leg of our journey.

LUXEMBOURG CITY

Luxembourg City

From Larochette, we headed mainly South and for the last part straight into Luxembourg City, the vibrant heart of the country. Despite being the capital, Luxembourg City is surprisingly compact and easy to navigate. We found this parking for bikes here, which we added in the ready to ride GPX file that you can download via a free account on our website. And because it is so compact, it makes it easy to explore on foot: you’ll find a fascinating mix of old and new, from ancient fortifications that are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site to modern architecture and lively squares. So after parking our bikes, take a stroll through the city’s historic streets and soak in its unique charm. And, of course, enjoy a delicious lunch—whether you’re in the mood for a local delicacy or something more familiar, Luxembourg City has something for every taste.

ESCH SUR SURE

Esch sur Sure

Since that nice lunchstop in Luxembourg City we have been making our way back North and we are approaching our final stop in Esch-sur-Sûre, one of Luxembourg’s hidden gems. This quaint village, nestled along one of the loops of the river Sure, is a great place to pause and soak in the beauty of the area. We think the ride has already been legendary so far, but we also think the best is yet to come—our final stretch follows the winding Sûre river, a route that’s arguably one of the best rides in all of Luxembourg and maybe even the Belgian and Luxembourg Ardennes. These roads, with their endless twists and turns, offer an unforgettable riding experience. After this drink!

VIEW ON VIANDEN CASTLE

And just like that, we’re back where we started—in the beautiful town of Vianden. This ride has taken us through the very best Luxembourg has to offer, from its lively cities to its serene countryside, and those legendary roads that make this country a must-ride destination for motorcyclists. And if you want, you can end this ride with what we think is one of the most amazing views you can get in this area, the view on the Vianden castle. Thank you for joining us on this Legendary Luxembourg tour. If you’re planning your own ride here, also check out our tips on What to do here in Vianden and Where to stay in Vianden.
