For our Delicious Dordogne tour we have chosen the very enjoyable town of Sarlat-la-Canéda, commonly known as Sarlat, as the central point. Sarlat is a beautiful medieval town and as modern history largely passed the historic centre by it is one of the towns most representative of 14th-century France. And with enough facilities a perfect central point to explore its surroundings in our Delicious Dordogne tour.
On the rides we are of course taking you on the winding roads along the river and making sure that you will enjoy the views on the river as well as a few of the castles that this area is also famous for. And we added one of our own "all time favourite views" to ride 2 of this tour.
Of course you can download the GPX / ITN files and full e-books of the 2 rides we have in this tour via our roadtrip planner but you can already find the info in this blogpost.
The historic centre of Sarlat is situated around the Rue de la Republique, crossing through the centre of Sarlat from North to South. On either site of the Rue de la
Republique you will find the beautiful protected monuments, making Sarlat a true open air museum, and shops, bars, restaurants and terraces to enjoy. We loved wandering around the Place de la Republique and the Cathedrale Saint Sacerdos. On Wednesdays and especially Saturdays Sarlat is the bustling centre of the region with its famous market in the streets surrounding the Eglise Sainte Marie. This former church holds the covered market with local products, but also the Ascenseur Panoramique. This open glass lift will give you a stunning view over Sarlat. If you are interested, find more information about the Ascenseur Panoramique on the Sarlat Tourisme website.

Off course, we have added some stops to stretch your legs and enjoy the delicious views the Dordogne region has to offer.
This 12th century castle is a perfect example of a medieval fortress, situated onthis rocky outcrop. You can visit its war museum with its collection of weapons andarmour in the castle. Going up there will also give you a beautiful view. For more information visit the website of the Chateau Castelnaud.
The village of Monpazier is labelled as"one of the most beautiful villages in France". A good reason to get of your bikes, stretch your legs and enjoy a drink.
As we LOVE panoramic views the next stop in this ride is at a point that will give you a panoramic view on one of the loops - a cingle - in the river Dordogne. And if the weather is nice and you like a picnic, this is a PERFECT spot!
We have added a parking in the middle of the village Les Éyzies if you don't like a picnic as you should be able to find some lunch here. If you are interested in prehistorical sites and caves, this area does hold some interesting sights. The National museum of prehistory here in Les Éyziers is a good starting point to find out more. For more information on the Museum, visit this website.
Just outside Les Éyzies you can find what is said to be the strangest castle in the area: Maison forte de Reignac. Built into a rock face it sure is different. Although only in French, more information on Maison forte de Reignac can be found here.
Although you will need to buy a ticket to enter the gardens of this Chateau de Marqueyssac, if you still have some time, we can highly recommended it. The gardens offer numerous panoramic viewpoints on the river Dordogne and its valley. A perfect way to end your ride 1 of the Delicious Dordogne tour ... with a view! For more information visit the website of the Chateau de Marqueyssac.
We already had some nice riding ánd views on this ride so far and the first true stop is near Rocamadour. We have added a parking in the GPX / ITN file that you can download via our roadtrip planner in L'Hospitalet, close to the point where you will get a really DELICIOUS view on the city of Rocamadour, built on this rock overlooking the valley of the river L'Alzou. Please make sure to park your bike in an official parking, as rules have changed and they are strict regarding parking here. You can enjoy the view and have a drink and maybe a bite to eat here.
Or you can go down into Rocamadour. We did this time and walked..... Especially the climb back up in hot weather is a bit exhausting. So if you want to go down but don't want to walk, we also added a bike parking closer to the centre of Rocamadour. Or you can take Le Petit train!
In this ride we are also taking you to a true biker place, Camping Moto Dordogne. Of course you can stop here to have a drink in ride 2, like we did, as we wanted to stay in Sarlat. But you can also chose to stay here: in your own tent or the accommodations that you can rent here. If you want to stay here and need some help with
adjusting your rides, please reach out via: info@quazyrides.com
The last stop of this ride is about 12 km / 8 miles outside of Sarlat in the city of Domme. With one last perfect view on the river Dordogne, enjoying a delicious ice cream from Artisan Lambert Glacier in our opinion a perfect end of ride 2 of the Delicious Dordogne tour!
You can download the GPX / ITN files of the rides and the full e-books via our roadtrip planner and then we hope you will enjoy the rides you will be doing in this Quazy Rides Delicious Dordogne motorcycle tour and your stay in Sarlat-la-Caneda.
